WHAT IS A LRC?
In 1990, the United States Department of Education established the first National Foreign Language Resource Centers (LRCs) at U.S. universities in response to the growing national need for expertise and competence in world languages. The Center for Urban Language Teaching and Research (CULTR) is one of sixteen LRCs across the United States.
Enhancing World Language Education
While some centers concentrate on specific language areas and others on world languages in general, all share the common goal to develop resources that can be used broadly to improve world language education in the United States. CULTR, for example, has a distinct focus on empowering underrepresented and urban populations with initiatives focused on career readiness. Beyond each center’s mission objectives, all LRCs work is organized around eight basic areas:
Research
Teaching Materials
Digital Tools and Resources
Assessment
Professional Development
Less Commonly Taught Languages Initiatives
K-12 Initiatives
Outreach and Dissemination
Current NFLRCs
The following LRCs create a national network of resources to promote the teaching and learning of world languages through the 2022-2026 grant cycle. Led by nationally and internationally recognized language professionals, these centers create language learning and teaching materials, offer professional development opportunities for teachers and instructors, and conduct research on world language learning.
