Program Description:

The STARTALK mission is to expand the learning, speaking, and teaching of critical U.S. need languages.

Through STARTALK, a federal initiative to increase the number of the United States citizens learning critical-need languages, elementary school students have the opportunity to participate in a two-week, half day language camp studying Chinese (Mandarin) or Korean. Held at Wesley International Academy, an Atlanta public charter school and an accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) World Programme School, this summer camp is provided at no cost to you through the STARTALK grant. Presented by CULTR, the Center for Urban Language Teaching & Learning at Georgia State University, the program dates are June 11-15 & 18-22. In this fast-paced two-week program, attending students will develop language proficiency as they learn about their target language cultures through written narratives, technology mediums, and face-to-face interactions. They will also learn about Chinese or Korean culture in small-sized classes. Students will be grouped by proficiency levels (novice and intermediate) rather than grade levels.

Who Can Participate?

Metro Atlanta rising 1-5 grade elementary school students who are highly motivated to learn Chinese or Korean in an immersive setting. Students do not have to currently attend Wesley. Attendance for the entire two-weeks of camp is required for registration.
